Lizard Heights

You could call my new apartment Lizard Heights as I keep coming across lizards, big and small in my flat. The other day I saw a quite big one that scurried the moment I opened the front door. Today, another, slightly smaller lizard popped up. I am not too bothered as I consider them to be clean animals and they catch insects so it could be useful. All part of life in Australia..

Latest news

I am really enjoying writing articles at the moment. I have started writing news articles and brief pieces with a journalistic element. It really is quite good fun to report on things happening here in Sydney. I never thought journalism could be a suitable path to follow and of course I am only dabbling, so that is okay. Good fun anyway.

A drive in the country

Tomorrow, I am going off for a drive in the country with a few friends. We are going to the Blue Mountains to these caves where you can see loads of glow worms. I am looking forward to it. It's a bit of drive but it will be good to get out of the city for a while. I like driving about in the Blue Mountains, it's quite spectacular to say the least.

South Park

Just watching an episode of South Park and it's a good one. It's about getting served by a group of kids from Orange County, a real dance-off, and the adults are all taking it very seriously. I've always enjoyed the subversive themes of South Park but sometimes I can't get into the style of the drawing of the cartoon and the squeaky voices. But that's nit picking. Funny stuff.

Sharky sharky bitey bitey

Just been reading about a suspected shark attack in Western Australia. Pretty bloody scary, I have to admit. Whenever I find myself standing on a beach here in Australia, I can't help wondering what horrors lurk beneath those waves.

I'm looking for a good swimming beach that is easy to get to from where I live and I may have found one. It would be a harbour beach so fingers crossed it's a bit safer than an ocean beach. I just have to get used to the potentially lethal fauna here in Australia. It will be a learning curve, methinks..

Mango heaven

The last two days I've been enjoying a rather wonderful mango. How so? you may ask. Well, I was never really one for eating vast quantities of fruit and I probably never will be. But since I landed in Australia I have been very impressed with some of the tropical fruits on offer. I have had pine apple, avocado, bananas which were all amazing and now I've had my first taste of a real mango. Blimey, it's blooming marvellous. Makes me wonder what else I can try..

A great choice for your vacation

What is better than going somewhere wonderfully romantic for your vacation? Usually, you will want any vacation to be a wonderful one but more importantly your all inclusive mexico vacation of a lifetime needs to be just right, I think you will agree. There are many destinations to choose from when considering where to go for your vacation.

You should certainly check out the white sand beaches of Riviera Maya. You see, the word Karisma comes from the Greek and means ‘divine favour’. Karisma hotels is a group of divinely favoured properties located on stunning white sand beaches on the Mexican Riviera Maya. This is the ultimate destination for a gloriously romantic vacation. This is a silver style vacation option that is certain to impress. Especially, since there is a wonderful emphasis on gourmet-style food choices.

Dave 'the Dave' Letterman

Since moving to Australia I have been pleased to see that the late show hosted by Dave Letterman is shown on Channel Ten. Good stuff. I used to watch his show years ago when I still lived in Holland. He’s got a dry wit that I quite like and he seems to be bit mercurial as well and that’s a comedy style I quite admire.

Skating danger

Saw something on telly that seemed a tad too dangerous, really. It was a news item of a long winding road down a hill in South Australia where groups of skateboarders risk their lives and the lives of oncoming drivers by whizzing down the steep hill. There was footage shown of films on youtube of these daredevils. Before long a really bad accident is sure to happen. Youngsters with a death wish. Bad but it was ever thus.

The great snacks of Emerald Forest

Can I just tell you that I love great new snacks or nice chewing gums or sweets. There are some lovely snacks out there but it is not often that you find a great sweet or snack that you really love. After all, we are here to enjoy ourselves aren’t we? At least enjoying nice foods should be a part of it, in my honest opinion.

You should definitely check out the wonderful products from Emerald Forest as they are simply something else entirely. Emerald Forest produces the highest quality natural sweeteners and snacks so make sure you check them out.

Did you know that Emerald Forest Gums, Mints, Fruit Sours, and Coffee Shots contain extremely delicious natural sweeteners and flavours, and colours. You simply have to try these for your self. Moreover, you do not have to worry about your teeth as these wonderful Emerald Forest snacks shield against cavities and plaque, so that is no problem whatsoever.

Taciturn and mellow

Feeling a bit subdued today. I did some socialising at a friend's barbecue party and it was nice to see her but somehow I wasn't really in the mood. Sometimes, people just get on my nerves and I look for my own company. I just didn't feel like being polite and friendly and making the right noises. No worries, though.

Consumer network site

The internet has become a place where social networking in all of its many forms is making an impact on the way we live our lives. One of the ways in which this is working is how we find information about products and services and how we go about choosing them. There are all manner of sites where you can find product reviews and user reports on all sorts of products and services.

A great site I came across the other day is acobay which is a wonderful resource and I would really urge you to check it out when you can. At acobay.com, people can leave comments and reviews about ‘stuff’ they have tried. This ‘stuff’ can be almost anything from mobile phones and cars and books to restaurants and many, many more besides. This really works as the reviews are written by people who have actually used these products and services. Give it a try to see what I mean.

At acobay.com you can find out what to buy, where to eat and where to play, so to speak. It is a consumer network that will connect you to people who use the same phone, have been to the same restaurant et cetera. You can see the networking power of this site and how it could benefit you and your family.

Commuter gridlock

Picked up a friend from the station last night and we then made our way back from the city centre. The weather was a shocker, wind and rain and everywhere people hurrying to their trains, buses and cars to get out to the suburbs. It was quite something. It almost had a mildly Apocalyptic quality to it. Good fun, though. We ended up having a really nice evening anyway. So there, weather gods!

Liz

I've always loved the voice of Liz Fraser who used to be the singer in The Cocteau Twins. It could truly be described as angelic or otherworldly; pure beauty. But my all time favourite track is this one she did for This Mortal Coil entitled 'Another Day'. It just gives me the chills down my spine whenever I play it. Audible melancholy and stylised heartbreak; just unbelievably beautiful. Enjoy!

Downtime

A few quiet days, or some well-earned downtime, so to speak. Doing some stuff around the house and some cleaning and washing. Very exciting stuff. Yesterday, I went to a local photography exhibition and was not exactly blown away. Photography is a tricky one. It takes a really good picture to make for a really good picture and it's not easy to get it right. But I enjoyed walking around the exhibition rooms, wine in hand, nibbles at the ready, and looking at the art work. A nice way to spend an hour..

A truly great holiday gift

I found a fun site I just have to tell you about. It concerns a great website where I uploaded a photo and virtually sat on Santa’s lap, just like when I little and all excited about Christmas and possibly getting a great holiday gift. You will find that there is a great photo frame that is not only digital but has a really remarkable feature. With the CEIVA digital photo frame you can have family and friends send pictures directly to your photo frame from all over the world or wherever they are. So, it works remotely which is a great feature. They can send their images straight to your photo frame using a cell phone or a computer. So, at any moment you can have a new picture appear on your digital photo frame. I think this is a great gadget and I would certainly love one of these for myself, dear Santa. It is really great fun and I think the fact that you can send pictures directly to someone else’s CEIVA digital photo frame a very exciting feature. Have a look for your selves.

Check out this site if you’ve got a wish and have a look around, then upload your very own photo and ‘sit on Santa’s lap’. It is good fun and I have it on good authority that Santa is in a good mood, so don’t leave it too late. Also, there is a contest that you can enter. A winner is chosen each day for the duration of the contest and twenty nine winners in total will be picked. There is a cash prize of five hundred dollars per winner, how about that?

Check it out now, as it is a fun site and you will find out about the CEIVA digital photo frame, which is a great idea for a gift for someone else, or yourself.

An incredible night's sleep

This morning I woke up feeling very rested and refreshed. Sometimes you just get a night's sleep like that. Full of dreams but somehow I feel very energetic and clear this morning. Some great holiday gift ideas

Once again, dear readers, it is that time of year again when the holidays are upon us. Thanksgiving Day and before you know it it will be Christmas again. And, of course, among other things Christmas means presents, now does not it. It may not be what Christmas is really all about but for families and especially children the giving and receiving of gifts at Christmas is certainly something to get excited about, I think you will agree.

Now then, how does Santa come up with his great gift ideas? That, I am afraid is a well-kept secret and something that only Santa Claus and Mrs Claus and some very senior elves know about. It is very hush hush as you will understand but I can tell you that this year Santa is very excited about a wonderful range of personalized holiday gifts and you may be interested to check these out as well.

Pexagon will be offering a stunning twenty percent discount off four truly wonderful personalised holiday gift ideas so make sure you look into this. There are for instance personalised thumb drives, which come in a range of colours, personalised pens, but also some amazing business card flash drives and even a choice of wooden USB flash drives, so you’d better make sure you point Santa in the right direction!

Warm one

Another warm day today but my apartment is pretty comfortable. On the television there are lots of worrying ads about pest control and mosquito sprays so I may have to be wary of that sort of thing. After all, I grew up in Holland and lived in England where the natural world is the least of your worries.

I'm going out for dinner with a good friend tonight. First, we'll meet for a drink at a local pub and then decide on one of the many restaurants on the strip. I'm looking forward to it, she's a really nice person.

Lateron this week I will be going to see the epic film Australia. I'm curious as to see what they came up with after all the hype and fuss. A review will follow in due course.

Blogging my way through life

I keep blogging/blagging my way through life. As I'm in-between jobs I have some time on my hands to dedicate to writing and that in itself is a good thing. I do love writing and find I never have to think hard about which subjects to write about, really. I read a newspaper article about Nicole Kidman and how on Facebook there are hordes of people organising themselves into groups to attack, denigrate and revile her. I find that quite strange. Why would you spend so much time and effort running down someone you've never even met?

I quite like Nicole Kidman and I love some of her roles. I think she's a good actress and a very attractive woman. Of course, being Australian like her, I may be be somewhat biased. I loved her in the Gus van Sant film To Die For, in which she played a calculating but sexy predator of a woman. I thought her performance was stunning.

I will be seeing her in Australia later this week so will report back on that. Of course, I sort of grew up with Nicole Kidman ever since Bangkok Hotel, back in the days when she sported a big set of red curls. I'm glad she got away from looney Cruise. Being with someone whose 'church''s creed involved little green men can't be good for anyone..

Generic terrorists attack

Watched with stunned horror the pictures on the news of the muslim attacks on Mumbai. The horror of being hunted by these killers, bent on singling out Brits and Americans. They also attacked a hospital (classy..) and a Jewish club. The sheer terror of finding yourself in a hotel with assassins on the loose, roaming the corridors.

The weird thing, though, was that while I watched the news on the ABC (Australia's equivalent to the equally left-wing BBC) the word 'islamic' or 'muslim' was never uttered. Not once. Apparently, the perpetrators were generic 'terrorists'. Nothing to do with islam or muslims at all, what made you think they did?

At a push, much later in the day, there was some obligatory speculation about which group was responsible. The media likes to have a handy little label to apply. It doesn't matter what they call themselves. Troublesome jihadi muslims; samo samo..

Learn to play poker with no risk

O sole mio

I had some business in Leichhardt, the Italian part of town and enjoyed seeing all the coffee bars, cafes, barbershops, bakeries and so on. It had a bustling and lively feel to it. Check out Operation Mojo!

Of course you will know Nat and Alex Wolff from the great ‘The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie’. You will be familiar with Nat and Alex’s adventures on the show and in their band. You may even know some of their hits such as ‘I Could Be’, ‘Changing’ or even ‘Alien Clones’. These guys are a lot of fun, to put it mildly. On their great website you can even download fan badges to put on your own myspace website.

Also on the website you can check tour dates and upcoming events, so you don’t have to miss a thing. So far, it’s all good as they say but there is also some bad news to report, I’m afraid. The fact is that Nat has lost his Mojo, would you believe it, and now the Band needs to head to the woods for some serious Dudification, no less.
Time to man up and find your Mojo again, Nat!

The great thing is, however, that today, Saturday, the twenty second of November, you can tune in to enjoy a live chat with Nat and Alex Wolff of the Naked Brothers Band. Can you believe it? This is all part of the brand new premiere of Operation Mojo, so go and check it out; it’s great fun!

A fascinating evening

Last night saw me dining and tripping the light fantastic at the fifty anniversary ball of Sydney's Tranby College. This is a unique educational institute for Aboriginal students and it was a privilege to be invited to their great party. The venue was the Grand Ballroom at the Hilton on George Street. There was great food and wine, music by Freshwater and Buddy Knox. The compere was a very funny and cheeky performer who cracked a few great controversial gags.

One of the Aunties told us a personal story of being one of the stolen generation. This was incredibly moving. All in all it was a fabulous evening that stretched easily into the next day.

Attraction

Wouldn’t we all like to know the secret of how to seduce a woman like a genuine full-fledged lothario? How did Casanova do it, really? Some women will say it’s not just about looks but a man needs to have a sense of humour and a modicum of intelligence as well. I am sure that these factors have something to do with it but on a basic level there is also something like pheromone attraction that comes into play in the interaction between the sexes.

After all, research has shown that human beings are highly adept at "sniffing out" compatible sexual partners. It has been proven that natural body scents play a crucial part in deciding whether we find someone attractive. The latest research was published by the Philadelphia's Monell Chemical Senses Center in the journal of Psychological Science. Using brain scans, researchers were in a positon to show that synthetic pheromones stimulated the brains of heterosexual women.

Great quality work wear

Don’t you just love when you’ve got your self some great new clothes? Most people like to look good in a new set of clothes or at least to feel comfortable in their work wear. Even better is when your work wear is of excellent durable quality. If you like fine quality clothes then look no further. Let me tell you. Carhartt has a great range of work wear on offer for you.

The company of Carhartt first started out producing a pair of overalls for the railroad workers. These days Carhartt is renowned for the durable quality of work wear. You really cannot lose with Carhartt. Their fine clothes are comfortable, which is important, and they last, which is very good news. Give them a go and you won’t regret it, guaranteed!

Carhartt’s clothes last longer and have flame resistant protection. This is a very good characteristic if you happen to work in an industry that requires flame resistant work gear. And, don’t forget, Carhartt has a full range of work wear, from ‘hats to boots’ as they say. Check them out when you get a chance; Carhartt's has some fabulous stuff on offer. Have a look for your self.

Recession talk

There is now a lot of talk of recession here in Australia. I am sure that we won't get away unscathed in view of the credit crunch and international financial wobbles. But, hopefully China will be keeping up investment in Australia. Of course, the AUD is weak so it will attract investment and that will be good for export and tourism. I don't know. People seem genuinely worried. I just hope that the pundits who say that Australia is well-placed to deal with the downturn are right.

Don't go there

When you travel you get to learn to adapt and enjoy whatever twists and turns the road ahead delivers. You know when to be philosophical when things are not exactly ideal or as you would have expected them to be. This is only natural. And, of course you will have your preferences and predilections when it comes to travelling and vacation destinations. For me, having travelled around Europe and a bit in Asia and Australia, I have definite favourites when it comes to which places I enjoyed the most.

If I had to say to someone don't go there because chances are you will not like it, I would have to offer large parts of the city of Athens as a potential candidate. I loved seeing the Acropolis, which towers over the otherwise grimy and monotonous sprawl of a city. Also, the old Turkish area of the Plakka is worthwhile. But when it comes to the joys of travel I would have gladly skipped most of Athens. It is a huge place and quite dirty and most of the uninspired architecture is of concrete and almost identical to every other building in the city.

I loved Greece but thought that parts of Athens were just quite awful. And I am not even mentioning the pollution and smog. Well, I have now, so there. If you find yourself in Athens make sure you escape to one of the wonderful islands and you’ll be okay.

Funny and strange

It is funny and strange to think that I live in Sydney, Australia now. How strange a thing life can be, really. I always dreamt of doing just this: to make my way back to the place of my birth. It was always this big thing in front of me and in the back of my mind. And now, after so many years, the dream has become real. This week I have had some more time to myself and I have been a bit more contemplative. Moving to a new country is not always easy but I have done it before when I relocated from Holland to the U.K.

Of course, circumstances are very different but I know that I will be okay. At some fundamental level you just have to trust your self and to have faith in your own bounce-backability, if you forgive me the usage of such an inane sounding term.

Life can be wonderful and also terrible. But dreams can come true, take it from me..

A dip in the pool

Yesterday I went for a swim in the local tidal pool. It was gorgeous to just float about a bit and cool off on a hot day. Of course, it being a tidal pool, I was swimming in-between fishes and what not but that did not bother me at all. It was fabulous to go for a swim again. I had not done that in ages. I will be back there soon.
