Friday after all

Transport questions

The other day at work I was asked to fill out a travel to work survey in which the University looked at all the different ways of transport that the employees use to get to work. I came across a mention of a car-share scheme and I was instantly interested as this could be a way to save a lot of money on transport to work. I am not keen on using the buses as they are such a cumbersome slow way to get to work and also it's very expensive. So, perhaps I'll look into this car-share thing a bit more. Must make sure I don't get lumbered with some drongo to share the car..

Teacher sentenced

The British teacher imprisoned in Sudan for inciting a teddybear to blaspheme has today been sentenced to fifteen days in prison followed by deportation. It really boggles the mind. Fifteen days in a Khartoum prison won't be easy and let's pray that she will get some level of protection. The chance that some muslim nutter comes over all zealous and will want to harm her is real enough. I hope Britain sever all ties with this insane regime. If these people want to live in the stone age then let's leave them to it.

Article on the BBC News site about the story of the British teacher in prison in Sudan for allowing the children in her class to name a teddybear mohammad. Of course, the BBC are once again falling over themselves to understand the muslim point of view. After all, the multitudes of muslims living in the West fully accept Western norms and values, don't they?

In the article a few people are quoted. 'But Adel Darwish, the political editor of The Middle East magazine, says that Muslim children - "like children everywhere" - give their pets the names of characters they liked, be it a religious figure, sports hero or pop singer.'

The prophet as a pop singer? Infidel decadent noise? Surely not? Perhaps Rock 'n Sharia or Stoning and Roll?

'But the majority of Sudanese people won't want to see Ms Gibbons in trouble for the naming of the teddy bear.
"People are very forgiving of foreigners, particularly Europeans. Nobody would think she was trying to offend them - they would just think she was ignorant.'

Right. Allowing a group of children to name their teddybear is ignorant. Getting in to a state about a school teacher condoning this is not ignorant. Slinging her in jail isn't ignorant. A country where the teacher possibly faces forty lashes for this perceived blasphemy is not ignorant. Right..

Personally, I love my two cats but I am not chauvinistic in this regard as I would be able to appreciate dogs for their specific canine qualities. I would never want to treat our two little creatures like surrogate children, which is something some people end up doing. I think that part of caring for a dog and your
dog responsibilities is realising that there is a distinction between master and dog and that dogs (or cats for that matter) are animals and not human beings.

Between master and dog should there exist a clear relationship in which obedience and discipline should have a part to play. That is not to say that a dog owner should not treat his pet with respect and love; the two attitudes are complimentary rather than mutually exclusive.

Becks to the rescue?

I wonder whether England's football manager Steve McLaren will decide to play David Beckham tomorrow night. They need to get a resounding result against crafty Croatia and are plagued by injuries. They can't afford to slip up and some players with experience may be what's needed at this point. Beckham has bailed them out before on more than one occasion so perhaps McLaren will opt for that solution. I will be curious to see what happens tomorrow.

RV roaming around

Going on a holiday with one of those motorhomes or RVs as they are also called would be a great adventure. Just to pack up and set off on a road trip with all of the comforts of home would be a very nice way to see something of the world. But where would I go? If I had the choice of travelling anywhere I would like I think I would take my time just driving south through Europe, stopping anywhere and everywhere that would take my fancy.

There would be no hurry or stress or anything to worry me and my loved ones on that glorious road journey. I would try to leave the motorways behind as far as possible and take the smaller, more scenic roads. The Southern part of Germany would be a favourite with its many forests, and mountainous regions. Switzerland would be fabulous and Italy simply a dream. I would linger long around the lakes around Como and Lugano and only very slowly head off towards Slovenia and Croatia.

Then we would make our happy way down towards Greece and take in some much deserved sunshine. Greece would take up quite a bit of our time as well. If time allowed I might even consider extending the trip into Turkey. Ah..happy travels.

Time off

Another day off and I have a few things to do, pick up a parcel from the Post Office, run a few errands, make a trip to the local supermarket, and do some work around the house.
