Today I observed a few general manners whilst serving a great number of students and staff from a wide variety of nationalities. I noticed that quite a few people from the South of Europe came across and quite uncouth and downright rude. Perhaps the language barrier comes into play as well but I think there is no excuse for rudeness. In-between helping students from Greece, Italy, Portugal, India or wherever, it can be a genuine treat to have an English person approach the desk. There are ways of doing things and if you go out in public and deal with people social graces and good manners can help ease things along as well as make for a more pleasant interchange. The Chinese students and staff are usually very polite as well, although their communication skills are, perhaps inevitably, a tad monosyllabic. You can't change people but I wish good manners and politeness were a bit more fashionable in some quarters..
