Nearly Lindisfarne

During our brief stay 'up North' we tried to go and see the ancient priory at Lindisfarne, or Holy Island as it is also called. Of course I knew about the causeway that gets flooded when the tide comes in and I had heard about the services having to rescue foolish motorists who get caught out by the fast rising waters. We drove across the causeway and got to the island only to discover by reading the tide tables that unless we hurried back off the sacred isle we would have to stay there for another six hours until the next time the tide went out. We drove back quickly while the waters were already half-covering the little road across the causeway. It was a matter of minutes and some people who must have been experienced locals raced from the mainland through the waves to get to the island before the connection would be lost. So, we nearly saw Lindisfarne. We'll just have to go back again.
